Setting up proper containment

Proper containment is critical when doing mold remediation to prevent the spread of mold spores to unaffected areas of the property. Here are the steps to set up proper containment during mold remediation:

  1. Identify the affected area: Identify the area where mold is present and determine the extent of the contamination. This will help you decide the size of the containment area required.
  2. Prepare the containment area: Seal off the affected area using 6-mil polyethylene sheeting and duct tape to create a barrier. The sheeting should be attached to the ceiling, walls, and floor to ensure a complete seal. The area should also be under negative pressure to prevent the escape of mold spores.
  3. Create an entryway: Create an entryway into the containment area using a double layer of sheeting. The entryway should be large enough to allow people and equipment to pass through, but small enough to maintain negative pressure in the containment area.
  4. Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All personnel working in the containment area should wear appropriate PPE, including N95 respirators, gloves, and protective clothing.
  5. Set up air filtration devices: Place air filtration devices, such as HEPA filters, in the containment area to remove airborne mold spores.
  6. Set up decontamination area: Set up a decontamination area outside the containment area where personnel can remove their PPE and clean equipment before leaving the containment area.
  7. Perform the remediation: Remove all mold-damaged materials, clean and sanitize the area, and dry the affected area thoroughly.
  8. Perform clearance testing: Once the remediation is complete, perform clearance testing to ensure that the mold has been effectively removed.

By following these steps, you can set up proper containment during mold remediation to prevent the spread of mold spores and ensure that the remediation is effective.
